WHAT IS A HAMMAM?
A hammam, often known as a Turkish bath, is a sort of steam bath or public bathing facility connected with the Islamic culture. It adopted from the concept of the Roman thermae and is an important aspect of Muslim culture. Historically, during Ottoman authority, Muslim bathhouses, or hammams, were often found throughout the Middle East, North Africa, al-Andalus (Islamic Spain and Portugal), Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and Southeastern Europe.
Hot steam is used in hammams to promote a thorough and energizing clean, and many treatments also make use of olive-based soap rich in vitamin E, which is noted for its nourishing and exfoliating qualities. Although the hammam ritual is quite straightforward, it does include several steps meant to cleanse and relax, which many modernized hammams still do.
Benefits of Hammam
There are a number of health advantages of using a hammam, including:
- Boosts the immune system: By dilating blood vessels, improving circulation, and opening pores to remove toxins, the hot steam used in a hammam strengthens the immune system.
- Relaxes the mind and body: Hammam treatments have the power to deeply energize and soothe the mind and body.
- Detoxifies the full body: By removing toxins and pollutants from the body, lowering sebum, and tightening pores, hammams can detoxify the full body.
- Exfoliates dead skin: Hammams have the ability to slough off dry skin, exfoliate away dead skin, and smooth the skin’s surface.
- Helps control acne: Hammams can help reduce acne by thoroughly cleansing clogged pores.
What is the difference between a Hammam and a Sauna
Hammam:
- Made of marble or tiled with ceramic, often with colorful oriental interior.
- Produced a very humid heat that is about 50°C in temperature.
- Focuses more on water than steam.
- Includes a sequence of relaxing and cleansing steps.
- Uses often vitamin-E rich, olive-based soap known for its ability to nurture and exfoliate the skin.
Sauna
- Made of wood
- Produced heat that is “dry” and can reach 90 °C.
- Helps in the elimination of toxins by dissolving them and boosting lymphatic blood circulation.
- Reduces discomfort and pain in the joints.
In summary, while both hammams and saunas have benefits for relaxation and recovery, they differ in terms of their design, temperature, humidity, and concentration on steam or water.
